Simple joy for a child

I still remember the time I first pulled a coin from behind Elly’s ear, my maiden amateur magic trick I performed for her. That look of pure amazement on her face was priceless, I wish I had taken a picture. She was absolutely thrilled at the trick and was 100% convinced that I have some magical superpower. She ran to mommy and screamed “Mommy! Mommy! Daddy can pull a coin out from behind my ear!”

Of course, pulling a coin from behind a then-7-year old’s ear will certainly impress her much. Then again, these few years have also been a time where I showed Elly many things for the first time, some of which are just pure daily mundane stuff.

When Elly first saw me balancing a can condensed milk on top of a glass bottle, she was as amazed as the time I pulled a coin from behind her ear.

“Daddy! How did you do that?!”

I was tempted to say it was magic, but I didn’t. I explained how the can was just at the right size to sit on top and that will allow the milk to slowly drip down and limit the wastage. I have to say it was a pretty good segue to bring the conversation into not having wastage. Perhaps that’s a story for another time.

Witnessing something for the first time for a child is really quite a fascinating experience for the child, and to be there to witness the child’s reaction is nothing short of pure joy. Sometimes, I feel parents shower so many material things to children thinking that will make them happy. Well, they probably do. Then again, I find sharing daily mundane things from our lives with them can be so fascinating for them.

If you run out of idea on how to entertain your kids or just want to impress them, try balancing a can on a bottle… that is, if you have not done that already.

Do you have any simple daily tricks to share with me?
